A funny thing happened on the way to the Senate yesterday...
Democrats were stunned with failure.
'In
the first battleground vote of the new Senate, Mitch McConnell's Team
America whacked Harry Reid's French Foreign Legion in a filibuster vote
to stop the "bill to express the sense of Congress to cut & run in
Iraq." Donks were only able to get 49 of the 60 necessary votes to
bring the bill to a floor.'The Liberals believed they would be cheering joyously, boasting their suppposed defeat of GW Bush
(with non-binding nonsense), just as they once foolishly claimed to have
'killed' the Patriot Act.
The
Democrat Senators were weakly trying to appease their unhinged leftist
base, and a perceived populist anti-GWOT mindset, by pushing a
pointless, non-binding, self serving, juvenile resolution.
This
'resolution'
charade began with Liberal Democrat's hoping to abandon the People of
Iraq. But reality slowly overcame the DNC insanity. The American Public
isn't in favor of running away, the irresponsible Democrat agenda only
emboldens Terrorists, and would leave millions of Free Iraqis
defenseless.
Thus, Harry Reid's Liberals changed their vapid
approach, to a symbolic objection towards a Troop Surge. As if,
undermining the tactics of the US Military, is any less despicable.
Ironically, a number of Democrats feigned a desire for an increase of
US Forces in Iraq prior to last November's Elections, including
Naughty Nancy.
Regardless, yesterday the GOP refused to embrace the undermining of the US President and US Armed Forces fighting the GWOT.
Perhaps, they heard the many voices of reason...Senator
McConnell managed to maintain a mostly uniform Republican effort,
objecting to the absurd 'dictatorial' Liberal Democrat agenda, which
tried to ban debate and censor alternative
(positive) measures in regards to the mission in Iraq.
Of
course, the MSM is laughably trying to portray this as a Republican
effort to kill debate, ignoring the historic levels of obstruction the
Democrats provided as a minority in the last Congress. The impressive Mr. Hewitt...
'This
hilarious bit of Orwellian rewrite of recent history with Minority
Leader Harry Reid's tactics sent down the memory hole is less shocking
than the Post's William Arkin's application of the term mercenaries to
U.S. troops, but all of a piece. The Mitch McConnell-led Senate GOP is
getting a taste of what the next two years will be like, and it needs
to get organized now for the almost daily assaults on its legislative
rights led by Reid and supported by the Beltway-Manhattan media elite.
If it holds together this week, it will hold together as necessary
throughout the year, and the base will support its members who defend
the principles of the party as aggressively as Reid's Democrats did
during the 2005-06 Congress. Forcing Senators Schumer and Durbin to be
the face of the angry Democrats is a very good thing for the public to
see, and defending the troops and their mission an even better example
of why the GOP deserves the majority back.'The mighty Powerline...
'The
Dems, of course, used the filibuster throughout their recent time in
the minority, and the MSM invariably covered for them even when, unlike
here, the filibuster actually did prevent voting on the issue at hand.
Here, the Washington Post described a Republican cloture motion during
the judicial nomination battles as a "motion to end debate." Here, the
New York Times described a similar motion during the debate on a gay
marriage bill as "shutting off debate." But now, in the world of MSM
pro-Democratic spin, efforts to resist cloture have somehow become
attempts to end debate.'The amazing Anchoress...
I
keep thinking of Hamlet, after his play has struck the conscience of
the king, Claudius. Through a whirlwind of confusion Hamlet turns to
Ophelia and says - with seeming clarity of mind - “believe none of
this.”
